The breaking load test directly measures the highest force a product can carry. The specimen is gripped at both ends and pulled at a controlled rate until it breaks; the force at fracture is recorded as the actual breaking force. The result is compared with the minimum breaking force given in the product standard or the manufacturer's certificate to decide on acceptance.
The test is performed with a method accredited by TÜRKAK under TS EN ISO/IEC 17025 (EN 12385-1 Annex B for steel wire ropes); results are issued as an accredited test report. Our breaking rig tests specimens with breaking forces up to 400 kN.
Determined Values
- Actual (measured) breaking force
- Conformity with the minimum breaking force
- Measured rope diameter
- Location and type of fracture
Applied Standard
- EN 12385-1 – Steel wire ropes, safety, general requirements (Annex B: measurement of actual breaking force)
Tested Products
- Steel wire ropes
- Wire rope slings and terminated ropes
- Chains, eye bolts and lifting accessories (to the relevant product standard)
For details of chain and lifting eye tests, see the Chain Breaking Load Test and Eye Bolt / Lifting Eye Pull Test pages under Tensile Test.
Specimen
Specimen length and termination method depend on the rope diameter and the standard and are given at the quotation stage. Please state the rope diameter, construction, grade and declared minimum breaking force in your request.
