Grain Size Determination

Accredited grain size determination to ISO 643, ASTM E112 and ASTM E1382, and of copper alloys to EN ISO 2624.

Grain Size Determination

Grain size directly affects strength, toughness and formability. Grains are revealed on an etched section and the mean grain size is measured by comparison, intercept or planimetric methods and reported as a grain size number (G). Semi-automatic or automatic measurement by image analysis is also available.

The test is performed with a method accredited by TÜRKAK under TS EN ISO/IEC 17025 (ISO 643, ASTM E112, ASTM E1382, EN ISO 2624); results are issued as an accredited test report.

Determined Values

  • Grain size number (G)
  • Mean intercept length / mean grain diameter
  • Grain size distribution, on request

Applied Standards

  • ISO 643 – Steels, micrographic determination of the apparent grain size
  • ASTM E112 – Standard test methods for determining average grain size
  • ASTM E1382 – Average grain size by semiautomatic and automatic image analysis
  • EN ISO 2624 – Copper and copper alloys, estimation of average grain size

Specimens and Reporting

The specimen is cut, mounted, ground, polished and, where needed, etched with a suitable reagent in our laboratory (ASTM E3). Examination is done with a metallurgical microscope and image analysis software; results are reported with scaled micrographs.
