Dry film thickness measurement determines, non-destructively, the thickness of paint, primer and other organic coatings applied to metal surfaces. Measurements are taken with gauges working on the magnetic induction principle on steel substrates and the eddy current principle on non-ferrous substrates such as aluminium. Thickness is one of the key acceptance criteria for corrosion protection and specification compliance.
Assessed Values
- Dry film thickness at each measuring point (µm)
- Mean, minimum and maximum values per area and part
- Conformity with the nominal thickness in the specification (e.g. ISO 19840 80-20 rule, SSPC-PA 2 levels)
Applied Standards
- ISO 2808 – Paints and varnishes, determination of film thickness
- ISO 19840 – Measurement of and acceptance criteria for dry film thickness on rough surfaces
- ISO 2178 – Non-magnetic coatings on magnetic substrates, magnetic method
- ISO 2360 – Non-conductive coatings, eddy current method
- ASTM D7091 – Nondestructive measurement of dry film thickness
- SSPC-PA 2 – Procedure for determining conformance to dry coating thickness requirements
Applications
- Steel structures, tanks, pipelines and pressure vessels
- Industrial liquid and powder coating applications
- Galvanized and other metallic coatings
- Paint specification acceptance checks and failure investigations
On Site and in the Laboratory
Measurements can be made on parts brought to the laboratory or on site by our team. The measurement plan (number and location of points) follows the relevant standard or project specification; the report includes the measuring points, values and evaluation.
