Hardness Test

Brinell Hardness Test

Brinell hardness test of castings, forgings and coarse-grained metallic materials to EN ISO 6506-1 and ASTM E10.

Brinell Hardness Test

In the Brinell hardness test, a hardmetal (tungsten carbide) ball is pressed into the surface with a set force; hardness is calculated from the diameter of the round indent. Because the indent is large, it gives a result representative of the average hardness of castings, forgings and coarse-grained materials.

Determined Values

  • Brinell hardness (HBW) by ball diameter and force (e.g. HBW 2.5/187.5, HBW 10/3000)
  • Indent diameters and mean

Applied Standards

  • EN ISO 6506-1 – Metallic materials, Brinell hardness test
  • ASTM E10 – Brinell hardness of metallic materials

Specimens and Reporting

Specimens are cut and the test surface is ground and, where needed, polished in our laboratory. Results are reported with the test locations, each individual value and the mean; on request they are evaluated against specification limits.
