The coupler tensile test shows whether a mechanical splice joining two reinforcing bars carries the tensile load as well as the bar itself. The spliced specimen is pulled to failure, and the failure location is recorded: in the bar, in the coupler, or by thread stripping.
The test is performed as a static tensile test to the customer's specification and acceptance criteria.
Determined Values
- Maximum force (Fm) and corresponding stress
- Failure location and mode (bar, coupler, thread stripping)
- Elongation across the splice, on request
Specimens and Reporting
Specimens should match the bar diameter and coupler type used on site. The report includes the force–extension record and a photo of the failure for each specimen.
