Positive Material Identification (XRF)

Titanium Alloy XRF Analysis

Chemical analysis of titanium alloys by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry to ASTM E539.

Titanium Alloy XRF Analysis

X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry determines the chemical composition of titanium and titanium alloys by measuring the characteristic radiation emitted by atoms excited with X-rays. Measurements are made on an instrument calibrated with certified reference materials. It is used for grade verification and certificate checks on commercially pure grades and alloys such as Ti-6Al-4V (Grade 5).

Main Elements Analysed

  • Al, V, Fe, Mo, Cr
  • Sn, Zr, Nb, Ni, Cu, Pd
  • The element list depends on the alloy and the relevant standard

Applied Standard

  • ASTM E539 – Analysis of titanium alloys by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry

Specimens

The analysis surface must be flat; specimens are cut and the surface is ground in our laboratory. Results are reported in mass percent (%) and, on request, compared with the limits of the material standard or certificate.
