Positive Material Identification (XRF)

Coating Weight of Metallic-Coated Steel by XRF

Coating weight (mass) of steel coated with metallic materials by X-ray fluorescence to ASTM A754/A754M.

Coating Weight of Metallic-Coated Steel by XRF

This test determines the mass per unit area (coating weight, g/m²) of a metallic coating on steel sheet and strip by X-ray fluorescence. The intensity of radiation emitted by the coating element is compared with a calibration built from reference samples of known coating weight. The method is non-destructive; the coating is not stripped.

Coating Types

  • Hot-dip galvanized (zinc) coatings
  • Aluminium-zinc and zinc-aluminium coatings
  • Tin coatings (tinplate)
  • Other metallic coatings (subject to suitable reference samples)

Determined Values

  • Coating weight at the measuring points (g/m²)
  • Single-side and both-side values, mean and minimum
  • Conformity with the coating designation in the product standard

Applied Standard

  • ASTM A754/A754M – Coating weight (mass) of metallic coatings on steel by X-ray fluorescence

Specimens

Flat specimens are taken from the sheet or strip; their number and locations (e.g. edges and centre) follow the product standard. Please state the coating type and declared coating designation in your request.
