X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry determines the chemical composition of stainless and alloy steels by measuring the characteristic radiation emitted by atoms excited with X-rays. Measurements are made on an instrument calibrated with certified reference materials. It is used for grade verification and certificate checks on grades such as 304, 316, 321, 310 and duplex.
Main Elements Analysed
- Cr, Ni, Mo, Mn, Si, Cu
- Ti, Nb, Co, V, W, P, S
- The element list depends on the material and the relevant standard
Applied Standard
- ASTM E572 – Analysis of stainless and alloy steels by wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry
Specimens
The analysis surface must be flat; specimens are cut and the surface is ground in our laboratory. Results are reported in mass percent (%) and, on request, compared with the limits of the material standard or certificate.
