Positive Material Identification (XRF)

Carbon and Low-Alloy Steel XRF Analysis

Chemical analysis of carbon and low-alloy steels by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry to ASTM E1085.

Carbon and Low-Alloy Steel XRF Analysis

X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry determines the chemical composition of carbon and low-alloy steels by measuring the characteristic radiation emitted by atoms excited with X-rays. Measurements are made on an instrument calibrated with certified reference materials. It is used to verify alloying elements and check steel grades.

Main Elements Analysed

  • Mn, Si, Cr, Ni, Mo, Cu
  • V, Nb, Ti, Co, W, P, S
  • The element list depends on the material and the relevant standard

Note: carbon cannot be determined by XRF; where a carbon value is needed, spark spectrometry is used.

Applied Standard

  • ASTM E1085 – Analysis of low-alloy steels by wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry

Specimens

The analysis surface must be flat; specimens are cut and the surface is ground in our laboratory. Results are reported in mass percent (%) and, on request, compared with the limits of the material standard or certificate.
